It's how you look at 'em.
OK, so I have this really great camera and it takes fabulous photos BUT the user (me) has almost no control of when the photos will look good or just so-so. I've checked out more than a few books on photography, watched a (yawn) really boring riveting CD and asked other camera users questions. I've gotten a few answers but I have so many more questions. I suppose the only thing to do is to take some photos on different settings and compare... which is what I did this afternoon with a few gorgeous pears. The set up is a cloudy day on my sheltered deck with natural lighting and NO flash.
1.) This is on a manual setting (P), the ISO at 1600 and the White Balance is on Shady.
2.) The manual setting is (AV), the ISO is 1600 and White Balance is on Cloudy.
3.) The auto setting is (portrait), the ISO is auto and the White Balance is Cloudy.
I think I like the warmth and depth of field on the first one but I wouldn't exactly say any of them are good photos. Just OK. What do you think? (You can tell me, I would love to hear!)
Wednesday's Gratitude:
I am so grateful to get some work done within the very tight deadline. Whew!

Those are gorgeous pears!I like the colors of #1 best and the composition and perspective of #2. Since you are outside, an ISO of 400-800 probably would've made the colors pop a bit more. Of course, you can do that in photoshop, too. Even on a cloudy day, I like (AV) ISO 800, White Balance on Daylight. For some reason, my hand won't let me use the Cloudy setting on White Balance.
I think the best way to get used to a new camera is start taking photos of an object you absolutely love. You will figure out your style and how the camera works as you try to get your beloved item to be seen in all its glory.
I like the first one too Deborah. I love playing with light and shadows, and think it makes for great photos. Candid portraits are also some of my favorites, and macros. I don't often alter them in photoshop, but I've been wanting to try this effect, and told you about it when we met: http://tinyurl.com/c7x68a
